API integrations that survive production traffic

Timeouts, retries, and idempotency — the unglamorous checklist behind reliable payment and webhook pipelines.

Integrations look finished in staging and fail in the first real traffic spike. The difference is rarely the happy-path SDK call — it is how you bound failure.

Bound every outbound call

Set explicit timeouts. Prefer failing fast over waiting for a partner API that is already down. Surface the failure to ops instead of hanging a user request.

Retry only what is safe

Retries need jitter and a ceiling. Never retry permanent 4xx errors. For payments and webhooks, design idempotency keys so a duplicate delivery does not double-charge or double-create records.

Make ops obvious

Log correlation IDs, expose dead-letter queues, and give support a way to replay a single event. “It failed somewhere” is not an incident response.

When Appfield ships payment gateways or event pipelines, these rules are part of the definition of done — not a Phase 2 wishlist.
